Squirrels

Browse through any catalogue featuring bird feeders, and you will no doubt see the words ‘squirrel proof’. Did you ever wonder why anyone would want or need a squirrel proof birdfeeder?

Squirrels are small mammals, more specifically rodents, and can be found in lawns, parks and backyard habitats. They are cute, mischievous, entertaining, and often masters of destruction.

Having a keen fondness for sunflower seeds, squirrels will stop at nothing to get to them. Their razor sharp teeth are ideal for knowing, making it easy for them to enlarge feeding ports on wooden birdfeeders. Handing cords are easily severed sending the feeder and its contents crashing to the ground.

Dealing with squirrels can be as frustrating and expensive experience. Observing their Ariel antics, on the other hand, can be interesting and entertaining.

Squirrels don’t enter your lawn or habitat to deliberately destroy your property. It is not your birdfeeders that are attracting them, it is the food they contain.

Squirrels would much rather have a feeder of their own. Making sunflower seeds and other favorite foods easily accessible to them will stop the destruction. It is just as cheap to buy a munch box as it is to spend the extra money for a squirrel proof birdfeeder. You don’t need to buy a special squirrel seed mix for the much box. It is cheaper to make your own with sunflower seeds, unsalted peanuts in the shell and shelled whole kernel corn. The sound of the lid flapping closed will be music to your ears. Feeding tables that hold whole ears of corn are also popular. Make sure you keep your munch box filled. Old habits are hard to bread, especially a hungry squirrel’s.

Remember, you have created your habitat to welcome wildlife, and that includes squirrels. They will give you hours of pleasure and a lot to talk about. You will have them eating out of your hand in no time, and giving them a well-deserved good rap.
